Designing on a budget can be quite difficult at times and many times stressful. Deciding how much you can invest in items, selecting the items your heart so very desires, and having a complete vision of how your dream space should look can be a game of give and take. With all of these glamorous home improvement shows, magazines and social media images floating around providing inspiration for your dream space, it is apparent that dreams do come true. The key question is, "How do you achieve your perfect look without breaking the bank?" Below are 7 key tips for designing your bedroom on a budget.
1. Lets start with paint
Paint is one of the most inexpensive items that you will buy. Start by adding an accent wall that will transform your space into a wonderful experience. This will serve as your focal point. Have fun with this and go crazy painting. You can always repaint it if you don’t like it.
2. Reuse items you have already
Everything serves as a purpose literally. A clear glass bottle can be a vase for flowers. Update worn furniture by refreshing the paint and adding new hardware. This will save you a lot of money.
3. Have fun sewing
Get creative and sew your own linens. You can start by using newly bed sheets or buy some fabric from Michael's. You can sew curtains and add different patterns, pillow cases, throws, and comforters. Don’t forget to add buttons and or dangling objects to your design.
4. Shop at affordable furniture stores
You will always find the major department stores such as, Home Goods, Pier 1 Imports, IKEA, Big Lots, Target, At Home, and Walmart. Oh, I almost forgot, shopping online at ebay or amazon prime. You can also shop at antique stores. Some of the best pieces you’ll find will be in an antique store. Yard sales are another secondhand place to shop. And why do people have yard sales? To get rid of old stuff that serves no purpose. After all, the statement, “one man’s trash in another man’s treasure” is true.
5. Be crafty: DIY
Build your own upholstered headboard. This will complement the entire room. Your finished product will be amazingly beautiful knowing that you put your hard work into it. Build your own night stand by stacking items. Build your own bookshelves by using softwood. Ideally, you can cut the wood and sort them in different arrangements on the wall. This is perfect and much more durable than a boring traditional bookcase.
6. Use your own art
Take pictures of nature, animals, places you’ve been, and etc. to make your own wall art.
7. Go with a theme
If you are new to this, you can stick to a theme so that you won’t be overwhelmed. This will help you by keeping it simple.
Remember these are just some of the few things that you can stick to in order to stay within a low budget while achieving the imaginable look that you’ve seen in magazines and on my favorite TV network, HGTV.
